International Hybrid Workshop
"Towards Sustainable Energy: Regional Cooperation and Global Context"

18 - 19 May 2023

The International conference “Energetika 21” and Azerbaijan State University of Economics, invite for an international workshop in Baku with parallel online participation on “Towards Sustainable Energy: Regional Cooperation and Global Context”.

Background:

Azerbaijan is an important oil and gas producer and plays an important role as energy exporter via Georgia and Turkey for oil to global markets and for gas to Turkey and the EU. Azerbaijan has a potential for renewable energy production as well as for CCS which could be used for exports of low carbon hydrogen.

Azerbaijan crucial geographic position and its growing transport and logistic role open wide opportunities for sharing experience and cooperation on decarbonizing energy sectors and establishing export routes for low carbon energies together with Russia, Turkey and Central Asia.

The recently published summary for policy makers of the 6thassessment report of the IPCC reconfirms the urgency to stay within 1.5° global warming. This cannot be denied any more in view of catastrophes such as the flooding of one third of Pakistan or the increasing damage of hurricanes and wildfires. The major point is now to find a rational and feasible combination of technical, economic and policy instruments to use the remaining window of opportunity to stay within 1.5°C, which requires to meet net zero CO2 emissions by mid-century.

The language of the workshop is English and Russian (simultaneous translation provided). It will take place at the facilities of the Azerbaijan State University of Economics, Istiglaliyat st., 6, Baku with the option to participate online.
