International Hybrid Workshop “Energy and Climate: Persisting Challenges in a Changing World”

15 - 16 May 2025

The Energetika 21 International Conference invites for an international workshop in Budapest with parallel online participation on “Energy and Climate: Persisting Challenges in a Changing World”.

Background:

The new US administration in office since 20 January 2025 has taken actions which impact on energy and climate both on a national level and on an international level: withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, reduction of staff of the EPA and other relevant offices, more flexibility for LNG exports and new energy infrastructure inside the US and reestablished talks between the two nuclear and energy major powers — USA and Russia.

At the same time the global challenges of climate change and of the discrepancies between the global north and the global south persist, requiring joint or at least coordinated actions on development, roll out and financing of low carbon technologies, topics which Energetika has continuously addressed in the past.

This workshop will continue to address the dichotomies between North and South due to geography and economic development challenges as well as the dichotomy between GHG emitting fossil fuels, mainly gas, and intermittent renewables and discuss the technology development paths to reliable energy supply and to decarbonization.

In particular, it will look at the differences between countries with different level of industrialization, their approach to economic growth and decarbonization, the implications of geographic situation. It will address the implications for the decarbonization pathways and for the necessary cooperation for investment and financing. In parallel the workshop will look at the role of fossil fuels, mainly gas, which need decarbonization and renewables, which need storage to bridge the intermittence of most renewables.

Organizational issues:

The workshop will take place in Budapest with the option to participate online. The language of the workshop is English. Participation is free, subject to registration and available places. To register, please, contact the Organizing Committee – energetika@unecon.ru.
